Why COVID-19 vaccination stalls in Kano — Prof Tabiu
COVID-19 vaccination in Kano State has not recorded the required progress despite government’s desire to vaccinate a significant number of the populace.
This was attributed to peoples’ resistance to the vaccines due to lack of awareness about its efficacy and safety.
A Kano-based non-governmental organization, Kano Against COVID-19, therefore said massive sensitization of the populace is required to stem the tide of the resistance.
Chairman of the organisation’s sensitization committee, Professor Muhammad Tabiu, told NigerianSketch during an interview that “Traditional rulers and Ulama have done it before for Polio vaccination. They have structures on ground to build awareness among the people. A number of them have already agreed to mobilise their people, while the Ulama promised to speak to their followers from the pulpits.
Tabiu however queries government’s capacity to supply the needed number of vaccines even if the people are ready to take them. He urged the state institutions concerned with the management and treatment of the pandemic to wake up to their responsibilities.
He expressed worry that the mis-information and dis-information being shared on the social media constitute serious impediment to all efforts to get people vaccinated, saying there is a huge challenge with regard to information management.
