In a major boost for the local media industry, the Kano State Government has announced a full scholarship program for members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano Chapter, to pursue professional certifications in sports journalism.
The initiative, spearheaded by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, aims to bridge the professional qualification gap among sports reporters in the state, ensuring they can compete effectively on a global stage.
Global training at El Roi London University
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Youths and Sports, Sani Musa Danja, revealed the details of the sponsorship during a meeting with SWAN members at the Kano State Library Complex.
He disclosed that 10 selected SWAN members have already been enrolled to pursue a Professional Diploma in Sports Journalism at El Roi London University, with the state government covering the full cost of their tuition.
“His Excellency takes the issue of empowering our people very seriously,” Danja stated. “We noticed that while many of our sports journalists hold degrees in other fields, they require specific professional certification in journalism to truly excel and meet industry standards.”
Strengthening the “backbone” of sports development
The Special Adviser emphasized that the move is part of a broader policy to enhance human capital in Kano. He described the sports media as the “backbone” of sports development and promotion, noting that quality reportage is essential for the government’s goal of empowering youths through athletics.

“We have moved in to ensure these sons and daughters of Kano overcome any hindrance to their professional progress,” Danja added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to maintaining Kano’s status as a hub for quality human resources.
SWAN reacts: A “major step” for journalism
Responding to the gesture, the Chairman of SWAN Kano Chapter, Comrade Zahradeen Saleh, expressed deep gratitude to the state government. He admitted that the lack of requisite professional qualifications has long been a hurdle for many practitioners in the state.
Key benefits of the scholarship according to SWAN include professional growth, enhanced Reporting and global standards.
“The dividends of sports can only accrue with the effective operations of a trained sporting press,” Saleh said. “On completion of this course, our members will be better equipped to contribute their quota to the development of the state.”
