Former Kano State governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, dumps APC, joins NNPP, gets automatic Senatorial ticket
Former governor of Kano State, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has finally dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and moved the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
After series of speculations that have circulated for days, Shekarau Wednesday afternoon left the APC.
His spokesman, Sule Ya’u Sule, told Nigeria Sketch in a short message that “Finally, His Excellency Senator Ibrahim Shekarau today officially announced his exit from APC and was immediately registered and issued with a membership of NNPP.”
Shekarau and Kano State governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, have been at a loggerhead over party leadership issues for months, and the Supreme Court lately resolved the matter in favour of the governor.
The Group of Seven (G-7) which Shakarau leads to fight for the control of ANPP in Kano State became distraught and some of its members, Shekarau inclusive, decided to dump the party for another.
Shekarau’s advisory council (Shura), after a week’s mandate to decide the movement’s line of action following all the disagreements in Kano ANPP, came with a verdict that the former governor and all his followers should quit the ruling party.
Although, Governor Ganduje made late frantic efforts to discourage Shekarau from leaving the party, his moves were countered by another former governor of the state, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is the de facto leader of NNPP in the state.
According Sule, “Shortly after Malam Shakarau officially joined the NNPP, the leader of the party, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso presented to him to Kano Central Senatorial form.”
By implication, Shekarau has gotten an automatic ticket to re-contest as Senator representing Kano Central federal constituency.
This has laid to rest the squabble that has just reared its head in APC about another former Senator, Senator Basheer Garba Mohammed (Lado) who is desirous of dragging the party’s ticket with Shekarau.
Lado wrote in a recent press statement that “I was prevailed upon to drop my ambition in 2019 to contest for the Senate seat for His Excellency Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, who incidentally, had just joined the APC party, 7 days to the Primary Elections.
“I graciously stepped down for him in 2019 even though I had already purchased the nomination form, and had been promised an automatic ticket. That was a difficult and heartbreaking decision to accept but I and my millions of supporters obliged based on my respect for my Governor, His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and for the sake of our great party.
“Neither I, nor any of my supporters subsequently threatened to abandon the party, nor did we cause a public uproar or rain insults on the person of the Governor, his family or his Government.
“It is therefore unjust, unfair and totally unreasonable for me to be expected to step down a second time so that Mallam Shekarau is given an automatic ticket again. Is this fair or democratic? I think not!”
It appears now that Senator Lado does not have to exercise any fear of being asked to step down for Senator Shekarau, but he may have the task of facing him at polls.
