Jigawa State Treated 178 of 196 Criminal Cases in 2021
A total number of 196 case diaries were received by the Jigawa State ministry of justice in the year 2021, according to the state attorney-general and commissioner of justice, Dr Musa Adamu Aliyu, who said 178 pieces of legal advices were given in respect of them .
He said this in Dutse on Wednesday 29th December, 2021 during a ministerial briefing on the activities of the ministry from January to December 2021.
He elaborated that the diaries involved a total of 90 rape cases, 27 homicide, 31 sodomy, 18 kidnapping, 2 acts of gross indecency, 20 robbery, 2 incest, 3 cheating and 3 fatal accidents.
All these were part of the activities of the directorate of public prosecution of the ministry alone.
He said “In the year under review, the Unit has received a total number of One Hundred and Ninety-Six (196) case diaries while One Hundred and Seventy-Eight (178) pieces of legal advices were prepared in respect of the case diaries received.
“Out of the total number of the case diaries Ninety (90) were rape cases; twenty-seven were (27) culpable homicides; sodomy has thirty-one (31); kidnapping and abduction have a total number of eighteen (18) cases; incest two (2); two (2) Acts of gross indecency; twenty (20) armed robberies while road traffic offences have two (2) cases.
“A comprehensive list is tabulated below thus:
The department has prosecuted and defended a total number of twenty-five (25) appeals before Court of Appeal, Kano Division.
The department has also completed the prosecution of Eighty-Three (83) criminal trials before Eight (8) High Courts at Birnin Kudu, Dutse, Gumel Hadejia, Kazaure and Ringim. Thirty-Four (34) convictions and Forty-Nine 49 defendants were discharged and acquitted.
“The department as stated earlier has received complaints from the public and referred the same to court and/or other security agencies for further action. Similarly, security agencies refer issues to the directorate for appropriate action. The nature of the issues and complaints consist of fraud, unwanted pregnancies, cyber-crime, assault, abduction, rape and adultery.
“The department is also responsible for the movement and conveyance of inmates from various correctional facilities to our various High Courts for prosecution. In the year under review, the state government has released funds for the activities. The directorate has therefore in collaboration with the officials of correctional felicities conveyed a large number of inmates from various correctional facilities.
“We have also attended various meetings with stakeholders for smooth take- off of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law in Jigawa State. We frequently visit the State Criminal Intelligence & Investigation Department (SCIID) to assist them in conducting a thorough investigation in high profile cases such as rape and abduction.”
