Kano court releases Muaz Magaji on bail
A Kano Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Muaz Magaji, a former commissioner of works in the state.
Magaji has been detained in prison on the order of Senior Magistrate, Aminu Gabari, since Monday after the court refused to rule on the bail application submitted by his counsel.
The former commissioner is facing a four-count charge bordering on defamation of character, intentional insult, injurious falsehood and inciting disturbance against Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.
The charges, to which he pleaded not guilty on Monday, contravened sections 392, 399 and 114 of the Administration of Criminal Justice of Kano State 1999.
The court was supposed to rule on his bail application on Thursday but decided to adjourn till Friday for a purported security reason.
The Magistrate ruled on his bail application on Friday, granting him bail in the sum of N1million with two sureties.
One of the sureties, the court said, must be the village head of Sarauniya, while the other one should either be Hisbah Commander or Chief Imam of Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of the state.
The court also requested Mr Magaji to submit his international passport, while the two sureties are to provide their passport photographs to the court.
Mr Gabari further said the registry of the court would visit to ascertain the sureties’ residences as part of the bail conditions.
