Kano postpones school resumption for undisclosed reasons
The Kano State Government has officially announced the postponement of the resumption date for both primary and post-primary schools for the 2024/2025 academic session.
This decision was communicated through a statement issued by Balarabe Kiru, the Director of Public Enlightenment in the Ministry of Education. The announcement indicated that the original resumption dates, which were set for September 8th and 9th, 2024, have been postponed due to some “urgent reasons” that have not been disclosed to the public.
The Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, emphasized that this postponement is intended to improve conditions for a conducive learning atmosphere for students. While specific details regarding these urgent reasons were not provided, it is clear that the government aims to ensure better educational conditions before students return to school.

In light of this announcement, Mr. Kiru has urged students, parents, and guardians to be patient and understanding regarding any inconveniences caused by this change in schedule. He reassured them that a new resumption date would be announced in due course.
This situation mirrors similar actions taken by other states, such as Edo State, which also postponed school resumption due to pressing issues affecting educational environments. However, unlike Edo State’s explicit mention of rising fuel prices as a contributing factor, Kano’s reasons remain unspecified.
According to Kiru’s statement, the Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, said the decision was compelled by some undisclosed ‘urgent reasons.’
Mr Kiru quoted Mr Doguwa as saying that a new date would soon be announced by the ministry.
“I wish to inform pupils, students and parents that the announcement earlier made for school resumption on 8th and 9th September 2024 is now being postponed. This is due to some urgent reasons that will help in improving the provision of a conducive learning atmosphere for our children. Another date for the resumption will be announced in due course,” the director said.
Mr Kiru, however, appealed to the people concerned especially the students, parents and guardians to bear with any inconveniences that might have been caused by the postponement.
