Lagos demands reduction in noise pollution from worship places
Lagos State government has warned that noises emanating from worship places across the state should be minimised considering its impact on public health.
General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Dr. Babatunde Ajayi, who gave the warning at a stakeholders’ meeting with leadership and members of religious organisations in the state, held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, said the importance of collective efforts in finding lasting solutions to noise pollution emanating from worship places needs the support of religious leaders to balance freedom of religion with community well-being.
Ajayi said that the meeting was aimed at fostering collaboration and dialogue between the agency and religious leaders to address the issues surrounding noise pollution and its impact on community well-being.
The LASEPA boss, while emphasising the need for religious centres to use soundproof certified by sound engineers, advised them to equip their facilities with noise meters to enable them monitor noise levels within their premises during worship.
He frowned on a situation where the agency received over 2,500 petitions within some weeks against religious houses, warning that they should comply with the state’s regulations on noise pollution or be caught by law.
However, Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters (Christian), Bukola Adeleke, urged a balanced approach that would preserve religious freedom and respect for the rights of members of the public.
Also, Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters (Muslim), Jebe Abdulahi, emphasised the importance of collaboration between religious organisations and the government in finding lasting solutions to noise pollution in the state.
