Super Eagles’ coach Eguavoen undergoes surgery in Belgium
Augustine Eguavoen, the caretaker coach of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has recently undergone a surgical procedure in Belgium.
The operation was initially postponed multiple times as Eguavoen prioritized leading the Super Eagles through their qualification campaign for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His commitment to the team showed his dedication to Nigerian football and his responsibilities as both a coach and the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The surgery took place in Belgium, a country known for its advanced healthcare facilities, particularly for high-profile individuals seeking medical treatment.

Reports indicate that the procedure was successful, and Eguavoen is now focusing on recovery and follow-up treatments. This information reflects a positive outlook regarding his health following what was described as a major medical intervention.
In Eguavoen’s absence due to recovery, Daniel Ogunmodede, who is currently coaching Remo Stars, has stepped in to manage the home-based Super Eagles. Ogunmodede is preparing the team for an important playoff match against Ghana’s Black Galaxies as part of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers. The first leg of this playoff ended in a 0-0 draw, indicating that both teams are vying for a crucial spot in the tournament.
Eguavoen’s return to coaching will be eagerly anticipated by fans and stakeholders within Nigerian football. His experience and leadership have been pivotal in guiding the Super Eagles through their recent AFCON qualification efforts. As he recuperates, there is hope that he will bring renewed energy and strategic insight back to the team.
