Tributes pour in
The devastating news has sparked a wave of emotional tributes from across the footballing world. The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) expressed its deep sorrow in an official statement released over the weekend:
“The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams. Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity, and the country at large.”
Taking to social media, the union added:
“Death has cruelly stolen one of our own. It has robbed our nation of a remarkable footballer, but it will never take away the legacy Jayden Adams leaves behind. We will forever remember his humility, his extraordinary talent, and the pride with which he represented South Africa.”
Adams’ footballing career was on an impressive upward trajectory. After developing at his boyhood club, Stellenbosch FC, the talented midfielder secured a high-profile move to Pretoria-based powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns last summer.
His consistent performances in the Betway Premiership—where he registered three goal involvements in 37 appearances across all competitions—earned him a spot in South Africa’s World Cup squad. Having made his international debut in 2024, Adams quickly established himself as a vital asset for Bafana Bafana both on and off the pitch.
At the recently concluded 2026 World Cup, Adams made three appearances for South Africa before the team was eliminated by Canada in the Round of 32.
Ahead of South Africa’s World Cup opener against tournament co-hosts Mexico, Adams’ partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, had shared a touching message of support on social media, celebrating how his hard work was finally paying off.
“Good luck with the World Cup, my love. I am so proud of you and everything you’ve worked for to get here,” she wrote. “Go out there, enjoy every moment and show the world what you’re capable of.”
The tragedy is compounded by the immense personal grief Adams carried during the tournament. The South African Football Federation recently confirmed that Adams had bravely played in Bafana Bafana’s 1-1 group-stage draw against the Czech Republic just 24 hours after the passing of his grandmother.
