Zelenskiy says Ukraine is advancing deeper into Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday reported significant advancements by Ukrainian forces into Russia’s Kursk region, marking a notable shift in the dynamics of the ongoing conflict.
This incursion is described as Ukraine’s deepest and most substantial penetration into Russian territory since the onset of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
As of now, Ukrainian troops have reportedly captured over 100 Russian soldiers and gained control over approximately 1,000 square kilometers (386 square miles) of territory within Russia.
The incursion serves as a psychological blow to President Vladimir Putin, who has positioned himself as a protector of Russian sovereignty. The presence of Ukrainian forces within Russian borders challenges this narrative and raises questions about the effectiveness of Russian military operations.

For Ukraine, this operation is not merely a military objective but also a political statement aimed at boosting morale among its population and demonstrating to Western allies that Ukraine remains capable of inflicting significant damage on Russian forces.
Ukrainian officials have indicated that establishing a “security zone” within Russia could help protect northern Ukrainian communities from ongoing artillery and missile strikes launched from Russian territory. This strategic move aims to deter further attacks on Ukrainian soil.
By capturing territory inside Russia, Ukraine may be positioning itself more favorably for any future peace negotiations. The hope is that these territorial gains could serve as bargaining chips in discussions with Moscow.
Russian response
The Russian military has declared that it is actively working to repel the incursion, with reports indicating that they are redeploying troops from other battlegrounds to bolster defenses in Kursk. This includes airstrikes against Ukrainian positions and efforts to reclaim lost ground.
Analysts caution that while Ukraine has made significant territorial gains, maintaining control over these areas poses logistical challenges. There are concerns about potential counterattacks from Russian forces, which could exploit vulnerabilities in Ukrainian supply lines and troop deployments.
Both sides have reported casualties during this conflict escalation. While Ukraine claims substantial captures and losses inflicted on Russian troops, Russia counters with its own casualty figures for Ukrainian forces.
The ongoing developments in the Kursk region represent a critical juncture in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. As Ukraine continues its offensive operations deep into Russian territory, both military and political ramifications will unfold in the coming weeks. The situation remains fluid, with potential shifts based on responses from both Kyiv and Moscow.
