Harry Kane Crowned 2026 Ballon d’Or Winner, Ending 25-Year English Drought
Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane was crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner at a star-studded ceremony in London, becoming the first English footballer to lift the prestigious individual accolade in 25 years.
Kane, who fired an astonishing 73 goals for club and country last season, succeeds a long line of legendary forwards and joins an elite list of English recipients including Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan, and Michael Owen—the last Englishman to win the award back in 2001.
The 33-year-old forward topped the final voting organized by France Football, edging out Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé (2nd) and Barcelona phenom Lamine Yamal (3rd).
‘Beyond My Wildest Dreams’
Taking the stage to accept the trophy from Brazilian legend Ronaldo Nazário, an emotional Kane described the historic triumph as a dream come true for anyone who has had to fight for success.
“Wow, I’m almost speechless,” Kane said. “First of all, thanks again to France Football and the Ballon d’Or for this amazing event. Being in London makes it extra special; it felt like a good omen.
“For any young boy or girl who wants to achieve their dream, anything is possible. My journey wasn’t straightforward—I didn’t go straight to the top. I had to experience a lot of loan moves and fight my way to get to where I am now. I hope that can give people inspiration.”
Speaking later to journalists, Kane credited his teammates at both Bayern Munich and the England national team for making his record-breaking season possible:
“My heart was beating fast and I was just hoping Ronaldo would say my name. I’m lucky and blessed to be surrounded by incredible players like Michael [Olise], Lucho [Luis Díaz], Bukayo [Saka], and Jude [Bellingham]. As much as this is an individual award, it wouldn’t be possible without them.”
Tributes Pour In: Wembley & Allianz Arena Light Up
In celebration of the historic milestone, both Wembley Arch in London and Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena were illuminated in gold in Kane’s honour.
Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel praised his talismanic captain for a well-deserved victory.

“I ran out of superlatives to describe your performances a long time ago, but I’m delighted to see that you have now been formally recognised by the football world,” Tuchel stated. “To become the first Englishman to win this huge honour in 25 years makes it extra special, and we are lucky to have you as our leader.”
Prince William, Prince of Wales and patron of the Football Association, also took to social media to celebrate Kane’s achievement:
“What a fantastic achievement and so deserved. A brilliant captain, a remarkable player and someone who has given football fans across the world so many unforgettable moments.”
Pre-Ceremony Chaos: Leaks and Glitches
Despite the night ending in celebration for Kane, the build-up to the gala was marred by severe administrative confusion. Just hours before the event, the official Ballon d’Or website inadvertently published three separate articles declaring Kane, Lamine Yamal, and Kylian Mbappé as individual winners.
The published article for Kane read: “A record-breaking welter of league and cup goals in 2025/26 has propelled Harry Kane to Ballon d’Or success.”
All three draft pieces were quickly taken down by France Football technical staff before Kane was officially presented as the rightful 2026 laureate later that evening.
